You should consume half your body weight in grams of protein per day. Like someone else said, this can be difficult to do with just foods. Protein is what builds lean muscle mass. It's also going to keep you from being as sore, therefore you'll be able to work out more often and build lean muscle faster. If you're going to take a supplement, you should look for something that has leucine (it gives you an increase in strength) as well as L-glutamine (the first amino acid burned off when you work out, and is necessary to replace in order to build muscle and keep from being sore). Honestly the only disadvantages to taking a protein could be the taste if you get a cheap kind. Go with a whey protein as opposed to soy...these absorb faster and better. Also look for an isolate as opposed to a concentrate if you're into taste. Isolates are leanest, purest form of protein and mix up very well and tend to taste better. Concentrates will be a little higher in fat and calorie count and tend to be the chunkier, chalkier kind, but are generally less expensive. There really are only advantages though, since protein supplements are going to be natural sources or things added in (such as the L-glutamine) that are already found naturally in your body. You're not putting anything harsh or foreign into your system, and you can really only benefit from a protein supplement when taken correctly (after a workout, the right amount of grams of protein for your body weight, etc.) Since there are no disadvantages, the long term effects are only positive as well. Leaner muscle mass faster, that sums it up. Hope this helps!
